Encoding NFC Tags

Ixkio has built an iOS and Android app so that you can encode your NFC tags from ixkio. Download the ixkio app to get started.

This is how it works :

  1. Select which Tag Code you want to encode from the console.

  2. Click on the Encode Tab on the Tag Function panel.

  3. From the dropdown, select Encode or Encode Unlimited

  4. Select the User (Lite plans only have one User)

  5. Click Activate

  6. Log into the ixkio app on your phone (use your Account Email, not the User Name)

  7. Tap 'Encode'

  8. Tap 'Start Encoding'

  9. Hold your phone over your NFC tag to encode

Once an NFC Code has been encoded, it will marked as encoded on the interface to prevent that Tag Code accidently being encoded again.

If you want to encode it again, then change the Encode Status for the Tag Code. If you want to encode multiple NFC tags with the same code, then use Encode Unlimited.

Encode or Encode Unlimited

Ixkio is designed as a large scale platform where every NFC tag has it's own Tag Code. To prevent accidental encoding of the same Tag Code twice, ixkio prevents the encoding of a Tag Code by marking it's Encoding Status as Encoded.

However, in some cases, you might want to encode the same Tag Code onto a number of NFC tags so they all act the same way.

To do this, use 'Encode Unlimited'. With this setting, ixkio will ignore the Encoding Status and allow the same Tag Code to be encoded on as many NFC tags as you want through the ixkio app.

Locked or Unlocked

NFC tags can be left unlocked so the data can be changed (by anyone with a phone), or locked so that the data can never be changed (by anyone, even us).

Note that this is the data on the tag - you can of course use ixkio to change the destination whenever you want. This setting doesnt' change that.

The general rule is that if your tags are going in public spaces, lock them. For testing and experimenting, leave them unlocked.

Which NFC Tags

The ixkio mobile App works best with NTAG213 and iCode SLIX chips.

Where is the Hotspot on your phone

On Android phones, it's typically in the middle of the back. On iPhones, it's along the top edge.
